What is an Off-Grid System?
Off-grid systems are independent from the grid and operate with storage. They are typically used in places like summer houses, vineyard houses, and camps where electricity is stored in batteries through solar panels. In areas without a functional electrical grid, the healthiest solution is to install an Off-Grid system calculated according to the specific needs. Since they operate independently of the grid, they must be designed to produce sufficient power throughout the year and have enough battery capacity to meet the needs of the installed facility even when there is no sunlight. Such installations are common for mountain houses, farms, signaling systems, remote information systems (highway signs), base stations, etc.
These are solar energy projects applied in places where there is no grid electricity available or where electricity frequently cuts off. They are also known as island systems, Off-Grid systems, or battery systems.
The direct current electricity generated by solar panels is stored in batteries with the help of charge controllers. Stored energy is ready for use. When the sun is out, after the batteries are charged, the excess energy directly feeds electrical devices. To use these devices, the stored direct current energy in batteries needs to be converted to alternating current used in the grid. An inverter must be added to the system for this process.
Advantages of Off-Grid (Independent) Solar Energy Systems
In addition to providing financial benefits to their investors, they contribute to a sustainable energy future by offering significant benefits such as reducing environmental impact and energy independence.
- Savings on Energy Bills
A solar energy system can meet part or all of a home or business's electricity needs through solar panels, leading to significant savings on energy bills. - Income Generation
Excess electricity produced can be sold to the grid, generating income. You can get paid by the electricity company for the excess energy you supply to the grid. With a 25-year lifespan expectation for solar panels, the investment turns into profit within a few years, ensuring a long-term investment. - Flexibility
The system can be installed to fit any desired size and space, providing flexibility. The system's installed capacity can be increased by adding new panels if there is sufficient space. - Environmental Sensitivity and Green Image
Solar energy is a clean and environmentally friendly energy source. By using this system, you can reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to environmental sustainability. Also, using green energy creates an environmentally conscious image. - Energy Independence and Security
With a solar energy system, you can meet some or all of your own electricity needs and achieve energy independence. At the same time, being connected to the grid ensures energy security. - Increased Property Value
Installing a solar energy system will increase the value of your home or business. Solar Energy Systems are seen as a valuable investment in terms of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. - Government Incentives and Discounts
Governments periodically offer incentives and discounts to encourage the use of solar energy. You can take advantage of these incentives to install solar energy systems at more affordable costs. - Social Responsibility and Contribution
Using solar energy reduces dependence on fossil fuels and fulfills your social responsibility as an environmentally conscious energy user. - Expandable Energy Storage
The energy production capacity can be increased over time according to changing conditions. Battery selection is very important in Off-Grid (storage) solar energy systems and should be well analyzed. With the right battery group selection, it will be a long-lasting system. Since there is no need to obtain permission from the electricity distribution company for these systems, they can be commissioned very quickly.
The Importance of Off-Grid (Independent) Solar Energy System Design
The first step is to replace existing equipment in the location where the system will be used with energy-efficient products. This will reduce the amount of energy consumed.
Then, the daily consumption should be measured. To do this, a list of which household appliances are used for approximately how many hours per day at the installation site must be made. With this list, the home's daily/weekly energy needs can be determined, and the system calculation can be made.
Whether the location of the system design is a summer house or a place used year-round significantly affects the system design and costs. If it's a place used all year round, panel design is done considering the worst seasonal conditions.
If the place is a seasonal or summer house, the first thing to know is during which months the house is used. In sizing, the radiation values in the summer months are taken as a basis for system calculations. Depending on the devices to be used, an inverter of suitable voltage and power for the amount of energy drawn instantaneously should be calculated. The most important thing in choosing an inverter is whether it can handle the starting current of the devices used (like refrigerators with motors). The inverter supply must be powerful enough to handle this current according to the characteristics of the device.
If the area of installation is a roof, the direction and slope of the roof must be carefully calculated. The equipment to be installed must be mounted in a way that does not damage the roof's insulation.
If the system is to be installed in a garden, it can be mounted with fixed legs or with sun-tracking systems. Depending on whether the tracker is single or dual-axis, the amount of energy produced can be increased by 15%-35%.
During the transmission of energy as DC, the amount of energy lost increases significantly with distance. Therefore, the distance between the devices (solar panel-battery-inverter) should be kept to a minimum.
