What is an On-Grid System?

In engineering, "Grid" refers to the electrical grid. Systems that operate connected to the grid are called On-Grid systems. These systems are set up to work based on the electricity produced by grid-connected solar panels being used instantly at the place of production, and any excess being fed into the grid without storage.

On-Grid solar energy systems can be large-scale, covering land and rooftops, and can also be in the form of micro PV systems to meet the electricity needs of individual homes.

These types of solar systems are used in residential consumption or in high-powered plant systems. The electricity produced by solar panels is transmitted to the grid through inverters with high conversion power connected to the central city system. The goal is to reduce the cost of your bills with the electricity produced on your roof and to make a small profit with the excess electricity produced.

Globally, with the increase in air pollution and the need for energy, the production of electrical energy from natural resources is rapidly increasing. The solution to the growing energy needs in every field lies in renewable energy sources. Governments or state-supported institutions have incentives for the construction of solar energy plants, establishment of solar farms, and energy production.

In the system, the storage function is undertaken by the connected city grid. The direct current (DC) electricity produced by the solar panel is converted to alternating current (AC) electricity through an On-Grid Inverter. On-Grid Inverters perform high energy conversion thanks to their MPPT features. The produced electricity is primarily used for the consumption of electrical devices at the installation point. Any excess electricity is sent to the city grid through a bi-directional meter. Monthly net metering is applied in On-Grid Solar Energy systems, and excess electricity can be sold. MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) is a technique used to charge batteries more efficiently with the electrical energy produced by the solar energy panel.

Advantages of Grid-Connected (On Grid) Solar Energy Systems

In addition to providing financial benefits to their investors, they contribute to a sustainable energy future by offering significant benefits such as reducing environmental impact and energy independence.

  • Savings on Energy Bills
A solar energy system can meet part or all of a home or business's electricity needs through solar panels, leading to significant savings on energy bills.
  • Income Generation
Excess electricity produced can be sold to the grid, generating income. You can get paid by the electricity company for the excess energy you supply to the grid. With a 25-year lifespan expectation for solar panels, the investment turns into profit within a few years, ensuring a long-term investment.
  • Flexibility
The system can be installed to fit any desired size and space, providing flexibility. The system's installed capacity can be increased by adding new panels if there is sufficient space.
  • Environmental Sensitivity and Green Image
Solar energy is a clean and environmentally friendly energy source. By using this system, you can reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to environmental sustainability. Also, using green energy creates an environmentally conscious image.
  • Energy Independence and Security
With a solar energy system, you can meet some or all of your own electricity needs and achieve energy independence. At the same time, being connected to the grid ensures energy security.
  • Increased Property Value
Installing a solar energy system will increase the value of your home or business. Solar Energy Systems are seen as a valuable investment in terms of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
  • Government Incentives and Discounts
Governments periodically offer incentives and discounts to encourage the use of solar energy. You can take advantage of these incentives to install solar energy systems at more affordable costs.
  • Social Responsibility and Contribution
Using solar energy reduces dependence on fossil fuels and fulfills your social responsibility as an environmentally conscious energy user.

Applications of Grid-Connected (On Grid) Solar Energy Systems

Today, solar energy is the most rapidly increasing source of renewable energy worldwide. Its low cost, ease of application, and quick return on investment make it a preferred choice.

  • Residential buildings using city electricity
  • Hotels and apartments
  • Solar power plants
  • Organized industrial zones and urban businesses and factories
  • Farms
  • Cold storage facilities
  • Agricultural irrigation
  • Shopping malls
